Yes, on occasion I like stuff like this. Lump-in-throat, life-type stuff with cute kids and lessons to be learned about interpersonal communications and how we're all connected and blah, blah, blah. So long as they star Hugh Grant (because face it, kids, he's just so wonderful to look at), and so long as they're done outside the formulaic box. Which describes
About a Boy perfectly. The filmmakers were smart to follow the book by Nick Hornby nearly to the letter because Nick Hornby is wonderful, too. As a writer, I mean. I have no idea what he looks like.
Anyway. This is good. Watch it one day when you want to feel better about the world and the people in it.

Good morning Moi: Poor Duck. This does look like a movie that would make you feel good, after you saw it. Which I haven't.
Enjoy your clip day!
Couldn't get the clip to play. Did Grant retire? For awhile there, he was churning out 3 chick-flicks per year.
I love this movie. LOVE it. Very sweet and not in a traditional way. I think I'm due to watch it again, because as you said, Hugh is just so wonderful to look at.
Happy MCW!
I thought Grant would have made a good Bond. In a Roger Moore sort of way. /runs for cover as rocks begin to fly.
Brilliant choice! I love LOVE this movie and loved the book even more. Hugh Grant usually does play that same sort of character, but this one has a bit more to him. And Toni Collette, I think played the boy's mom and she was brilliant. Oh, how this movie makes you cringe with junior high anxiety! Nick Hornby books also are faves. There is only one of his that I couldn't get through.
Yes, oh yes! Another corker!
Karl: Another one for your queue. Mrs. Karl will most likely like it :o)
Troll: That's weird that you can't get the clip to play. Good question about Hugh. Maybe he's doing terrible plastic surgery things to his face?
Boxer: It's really a sweet movie without being cliched or treacly. The end is a gas, too.
MRM: Actually, I agree with you. A bit tongue in cheeky, but I think he would have worked.
Pam: Which one was that? How To Be Good? That's about the only one I wasn't totally thrilled with but I loved him pretty much from High Fidelity on (also a great movie). Rob Fleming? Totally identify with him. One of my top five all time great modern literary characters :o)
Cake: Thanks; but I had to Google corker.
I've not seen (or even heard of) this movie, but I thought about going with 4 weddings and a Funeral just for the wedding toast scene.
Happy MCW!
Moi, it was "A Long Way Down" (think that is the title anyway)... for some reason just couldn't get into it. I never saw the movie High Fidelity because it was too Americanized. Although I think Fever Pitch adapted well. I looked at his website and there are several I have not read. Must remedy that situation. Let me know if you read the one above and if it is worth trying again. I'm not usually one to put a book down and give up on it.
Buzz: I like that movie, too.
Pam: Pam, I usually slog through to the finish, too. But I haven't read that one, so I couldn't tell you if it's worth it or not. Almost picked up the new one the other day . . .
Yeah that's a very cute movie. And Hugh Grant is very cute with or without the floppy fringe
