How It's Done

From the beginning, I was an American Idol fan. That's because from the beginning, the show put its mouth where its money was and actually plucked a bona fide singing star out from among the hoi polloi.

In spite of all the subsequent hype and the hoopla – the gossip over Paula Abdul's mental capacity, the barbs aimed at Simon's Big Blue Meanie demeanor – each season the show manages to bring an unknown talent or two to light. The fact that a huge contingent of teenyboppers most likely control the outcome is beside the point. Besides, those teenyboppers put an unlikely Taylor Hicks through a couple years back, and although he has since proved himself rather dim, that was surely unprecedented, given the other fresh faced cuties in the competition. And you don't have to win Idol to become a star, either, as the multi-talented Jennifer Hudson has proven.

Still, my favorite remains the very first Idol ever. In my humble opinion, Kelly Clarkson has one of the most nimble voices in pop music today. To the point where anyone else attempting to do one of her songs can only fail miserably, as one of the contestants did on last night's Idol. It's really hard to beat this:

I love Kelly. You are absolutely right, the first is the best; she is what the show was designed to find -- a great pop singer. Now others have been good with R&B (Fantasia) and the most successful idol Carrie (Country) ... but Kelly set the standard for sure. Re her fashion style; I think she struggles like most folks who put on and take off weight - they don't make clothes for girls with real curves (as opposed to fake curves). But I wish she would get her thyroid checked, be willing to be she will have an issue with it.

Isn't she a Fat-Ass now ?

I loved the first season and think Kelly Clarkson is the reason it's still a popular show. Anyone wondering what's good about American Idol only have to look Clarkson and they'll know.

Didn't watch Idol early on and can't recalling hearing her sing.

Judging from the video, she's pregnant and I hope I'm not the babydaddy.

Pam: It's alarming the way her weight yo-yos. Given your thyroid experience, you may be on to something.

Milk: Word. Real men in no way believe that their love of Kelly Clarkson otherwise hinders them from being real men. Carry on.

Heff: I believe the PC term is Rubenesque.

Boxer: Yeah, she started the show off with a bang. Without her, who knows . . .

Troll: Are you and Heff in cahoots to make me smack you both?

i think kelly is good too..however, david cooks riff on chris cornell's version of billie jean was the one and only chill inducing moment on AI. i watched last night and it was difficult. i didnt see the last three -i couldnt take it.

Chickory: Agreed on all counts. We TIVOed it in order to watch two episodes of Bull*hit and managed to get through the entire show in an hour, mainly by cutting out the stupid vignettes at the beginning, Ryan's inanities, and half the performances. At this point, they got about five-point-three seconds to impress before being fast forwarded.

Cook's was indeed one of the few moments that raised the hairs on the back of my neck. I will add to that, Fantasia Barino's "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess.

I watched in Tivo-mode too. Two hours of Ryan and those dorky taped interviews are tiring/dull.

I'll be so happy when they get down to 10.

Lets face it. This pitiful show has jumped the whale. Kara embarrasses me with her schoolgirl giddiness over goldilocks, the long tall drink of milquetoast. What a bunch of pullet scratch - two hours to snuff out the good seeds? I would make short work of these losers. Wheres the hook from the Gong Show when ya need it. Kelly is fat, lettuce be honest here. But so what? Look at Aretha!

I totally agree about Kelly! Love those vocals of hers.

Sorry. Gave you 99 Troll points as compensation.

Boxer: Yes, thankfully things move pretty quickly once we're down to ten or so contestants just singing.

Dovey!: Did they let you out of heaven just to come down here and grace us with a comment?

Dani: For just once, I'd love to open my mouth and have that kind of sound come out. My next life, perhaps.

Troll: I still don't know what I did to earn it all, but I have faith that one day, Troll Points will equal something way cool!

Ruf works at a local concert venue some weekends and always complains bitterly about some of the dross he has to sit through.

I was astonished to hear him say that Kelly Clarkson was rather good - especially as he cant bear any of Simon Cowell's talent shows. He said she can really belt 'em out and in tune too :)

PS I should also point out that Ruf is an ex punk rocker which is why it's even more astounding that he liked Kelly
