Movie Clip Wednesdays: Musicals

Baille Walsh has admitted that he probably never would have gotten his first movie, Flashbacks of a Fool, made had it not been for the fact that his good buddy, Daniel Craig, agreed to star. The director also managed to rope in American rapper Eve and English actress Claire Forlani, although he practically tossed her away in a too-brief cameo, except for the very last moments of the heart shattering ending.

When it premiered, Flashbacks of a Fool was roundly panned by critics for being overwrought and preachy, but I didn't find it half bad, mostly due to the performances of the two lead teenage actors, Harry Eden and Felicity Jones.

Not a musical per se, the movie does feature a fabulous soundtrack and one especially memorable scene in which the two lead teenage characters dance and lip synch their way through the achingly lovely final verse of Roxy Music's metamorphic "If There is Something," Jones as resplendently assured in the first flush of teenage love as Eden is painfully awkward.

Brilliant song. Brilliant scene. Best thing about the movie.

Oh, and how eagerly am I awaiting the release of this?

Totally cool!

Hello. I saw your entry at Boxer's and thought I have a look. Very "stimmungsvoll". Thank you.

This is why I'm happy about Movie Clips, I've never heard of this, never would have had it on radar. It's so perfectly "Moi" - kick ass music and even though this isn't really a musical, you were right to pick it. Bonus points for orginality.

Well, wow! This is one I have never seen either and must go look for soon. Daniel Craig in ANY movie is worth a look or three. Happy movie clip day, I'm predictable ;)

Troll: Aw come on, you know you want to release your inner Glam Rock God.

K: The girl made him wear it; they were playing dress up.

Mago: Sometimes, capturing the atmosphere of a certain time and place is enough to make me interested in a movie.

Boxer: I was going to post Ewan McGregor doing Iggy Pop in Velvet Goldmine, but figured it would bring Troll howling. Shows what I know.

Pam: He's not in it but for more than about 15 minutes total, but he looks good regardless.

i wanted the scene in sid and nancy at the very end where the little kid walks up holding a boom box blasting disco....the final stake in the heart of punk.

Never heard of this, but then I don't get out much. Way cool. Enjoy your MCW.

I'm probably gonna check out "The Runaways" myself.

K9: Hell, ANY scene in Sid and Nancy :o). And did you catch a pre-plastic surgery Courtney Love at the beginning? Priceless.

Milk: It's called, "Having fifty gazillion movie channels on cable because we don't get out much, either."

Heff: I can see that :o) At first I thought, Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie? That's like casting Meryl Streep as Debbie Harry. But it looks like the girl nails it.

I've never even heard of this movie. I'll have to look for it on cable. But the Runaways, that's a movie I'd like to see. I'm a big Joan Jett fan. Loved her version of Crimsom and Clover with the Black Hearts.

Happy MCW!

Boneman: I don't think there are any hard and fast rules. All that Jazz is big enough for two!

Chickory: I read the book before I saw the movie. Michelle Pfeiffer was perfect in it. Not a dissonant note in her performance. Crazy/icy/strong. Oftentimes, her looks overpower her performance, but not in this instance. I like her mostly because of her grace on screen and if she gives a good performance, bonus.

Savannah: Thanks! One of rock and roll's most interesting stories, for sure. The only one who achieved fame out of the experience was Joan Jett. Lita Ford has had a few minor hits, and Cherie Currie disappeared for a while before reappearing to write a book (which for the longest time was out of print but has now been re-released to coincide with the movie – can't touch a first printing for under $50). Today, she makes a living as a chainsaw artist.

Buzz: I'm a HUGE fan of Joan Jett as well. I saw her years ago when she was touring with Robert Plant and by the time she was done, the audience could have cared less about Plant. She ended the show with a version of Iggy Pop's "I Wanna Be Your Dog" that brought the house down.

Good morning Moi,

The girl is kinda cute, but the guy seems like he might be one of the skaters that Buzz has been talking about.

I enjoyed Joan Jett, she could really belt out a tune.

so, I've heard of Flashbacks of a Fool, but I'll be checking it out very soon.

side note: I used to have a Beta fish. His name was Sid Fishous. :)

**not heard of...**

Karl: Today, we have "lesbian chic." Back in the 70's, it was androgyny chic for men.

Kym: ROTFL at Sid Fishous. So true, though. I had Betas once. They ate each other.
