Culture Rip (Lite)

(Because I'm really, really, really, really swamped, I can only make this a short rant), but holy heck fire and Christ on a Cracker, WTF aren't there any great rock groups anymore who make music that rips the top of your head off and sends shivers down your spine and makes you want to put your thumb out on the highway to vagabond it for a little while behind the bar in some dusty desert town with a belly shirt and cut offs? How come it's all Rhianna and Beyonce and Earnest Guitar Players with Americana chips on their shoulders and stoooooooopid John Mayer trying to pants off the little girls, but no one with any kind of real grit and verve?

At least there is this song:

It's all I got for now . . .

real grit and verve seems to have been replaced with modern day Musak; Rhianna and the rest; zzzzzzz. Did you see the trailer/etc for "Rock of Ages"? I'm so confuzzled and yet.... it's a time we all experienced and color me: fascinated (and that includes Tom Cruise with mascara and tats)
xoxoxo

Gawd Ahhhmighty! I freaking LOVED lurved this video.

I die.

Front man reminds me a little bit of the troll on american idol a few cycles ago - "casey?"/
voice is incredible a richer Kevin Kinney.

im going to make it my business to see this band. Thanks Moi, that really is the s**t. mmmwah!

chickory said...

Ive watched it a few times now. Its the best thing Ive seen in a long time.

Ja, it's very depressing. Sort of like a star that supernova-ed with nothing left but a burnt-out shell.

chickory said...

@lx depressing?! more like righteous disappointment! right on the money to my ear.
it beats the hell out of whiner michael stipe's song when he lost his religion. that really was awful.

Boxer: I can't tell if Rock of Ages is going to be woefully wince-inducing or sneakingly genius. I'll see it anyway, because either option could at least be fun.

Chickory: Cool! Glad you dig it. I thought same thing about Mr. Frontman.

lx: The musical situation, you mean? If so, yes, that's a great analogy. All that creativity that burst forth from the 90s and now we have . . . ? If you mean the song? Depressing? Hmmm . . .

Chickory: We watched the Chile Peppers get inducted into the RnR Hall of Fame last night. TIVOed from the weekend. Flea's speech was such a heartfelt, non-primma dona exposition on his love for and importance of music and the joy it brings to his life and others, and then he and the band tore through three hits like they were 20 years old instead of 50, and I thought: Who is doing that today? Who has the sheer audacious musical talent of these dudes? Jack White, maybe, but he's a tinkerer/thinker like Bowie, not really a rock star. I just want some balls to the walls rock and roll bands like Chile Peppers and Guns 'n' Roses. Hell, I'd probably even settle for an Everclear. (I don't dare ask for Nirvana.)

chickory said...

i tried once, i tried twice, I AM DONE!

everclear was/is a great band. i love the guitar progression on "father of mine" and Nirvana? the best of the 90's/ Chili peppers! I get HBO maybe I will dial that up this weekend.

ja- now i think lx meant the situation not the song. theres no way that rebellious anthem could be depressing to anyone.

LẌ said...

Ja, the reference was to the topic at hand.

Chickory: This song is chock-a-block full of great lyrics. First time I ever heard it, I had to pull over to the side of the road to really listen to it. Fabulous. The rest of the album is pretty good, too. You let me know if/when they play Atlanta, and I'll hop that 3-hr non-stop on over.

lx: Ja. Ich dachte dass :o).

For ME, Zakk Wylde is the only person that's actively producing "new music" that I can really tolerate these days.

moi said...

Heff: But if Wylde shows up in Rock of Ages, I'm going to throw something. (good to see ya.)

Good afternoon Moi,

All the good ones of gotten old and moved on to other things. And the young ones spend so much time texting, tweeting and bleeting. They can't come up with an original thought. Hence the lack of variety.

Enjoy your weekend.

Karl: Oh, that Dee Snider has always been a funny one. I did so love his testimony at the PMRC Senate hearings, though.

Buzz Kill said...

I've never heard of Manchester Orchestra but thry're kicking. They're first album was called "I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child" - tragically hip.

@Karl - I never saw Dee do Mack the Knife before. He sounds great but with his hair pulled back, he looks frighteningly like Nicholas Cage. And while we're on the subject of remakes.

it's all geek to me :/

Buzz: Now, all we need is Iggy Pop doing "Stormy Weather."

Aunty: That's okay :o)

I kinda liked it. Who's hosting haiku this week.

Jenny said...

@Grins - Grumpy Granny awarded the prize on Friday to a person who doesn't have a blog. ????

chickory said...

then its a haiku free week. good to rest up for next time - but who knows where that will be?

Jenny said...

Any volutneers who want to host Haiku Monday next week? I don't want this to go away.

Karl said...

Good afternoon Moi,

Serendipity stepped up to host an abbreviated haiku this week. She's working on Australian time. So if you want to throw a quick one in, the topic is "bear".

If Troll is out of the loop and we want to keep Haiku Monday going. Someone needs to be, lead point of contact. Any suggestions?

Hi All,

I have been out of pocket and see there is a crossroad here. I’ll volunteer to host a Haiku Monday Tuesday with a deadline of Midnight in Australia Tuesday this week. We’ll get back on track after that.

The theme would be simply BEAR – because I was looking ta them this weekend.

If that works, come join me at http://serendipitouswildmoments.wordpress.com/2012/05/14/haiku-monday-tuesday/

Saw Spiritualized in Chapel Hill, NC, Saturday night. Awesome show. And I thought lead guitar was dead these days. Very loud without being abrasive, great sounds. Grit and verve were present and accounted for.

And after the show, the frontman was wearing a shirt that didn't even need to be seen: the shirt had the cover of the Velvets' "Live at Max's Kansas City." Their influence was unmistakable.

Our younger son will be the family's only representative at Bonnaroo this year: Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Blind Pilot . . .

Moi,

I am getting ligit entries. I guess some want to play on the unorthodox schedule I proposed. Do you want to just judge these, or shall I?

Serendipity

moi said...

Czar: Awesome on Spiritualized. But I refuse to click on the Iggster . . .

Serendipity: If you have time to judge this go round, that would be great. I've been working straight since 6a.m. today, trying to get a publication to bed. Breaking for dinner and then hitting it again. If your winner has a blog, they'll be up next week. If they don't, I'll host. Just let me know!

Gotcha. Good luck with the load.

I'll get a winner announced later today.

Back to the post....

Moi, you've posted this band before, didn't you? I'm glad they are rockin' it but for me....still no dice.

Radiohead IS a good rocking band, true, not balls to the wall, much more talented. I tried to like the Black Keys and the Band of Skulls and all that other nonsense my sister sent me and I have to tell you....none of it really grabbed me. NOT WHEN my notes were: "Sounds like Joy Division" "Reminds me of Jack White" or "Sounds like Black Sabbath."

Foo Fighters still rock out but they've been around a long ass time. *sigh* you could be right.....

But then again, people are rocking out to THIS!(turn down and keep watching the video if you must, it's dang freeky!)

moi said...

La Diva: Have I posted this before? Oy. The brain cells. Well, girl, I fink it takes a whole lotta lotta to squick me out, but that video kind of did it. Good to see Juan Carlos finally got his 15 minutes of music video fame, though. And, it is easy to dance to . . .

OK, Moi, I think you are off the hook. Haiku winner has just been announced.

TEEEE!!!! I can't stop watching it! Hey, watching it led me to investigating them more and it made me realize something: computers are cheap. Cheaper than guitars and drum kits. Which is WHY you see/hear more bands like the one I linked to and perhaps another reason why we see less ROCK out with your C*CK out bands? Just a theory, anyways...

The DJ got the new Jack White....

moi said...

La Diva: Hmmmm . . . good theory. Kraftwerkian prophesies coming true. Re: Jack White-- S.B. got it, too. Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, with the exception of the first single, which I do like.
