Nothing Gold Can Stay
I loves me some summer. I truly do. If I had my way, Mother Nature would ensure all sunshine, all day, every day. But it's September 4 and let's face it, folks, we can no longer fool ourselves it's still summer. Well, unless "we" live in southern Florida or Louisiana. Or Texas. But that just ain't right. I loves me some four seasons as well because how would we know what it is we truly love unless it goes away and leaves us on occasion? And, besides, it's awfully tough to wear cashmere in July.
Anyway.
My surest indications that summer is waving its goodbyes is that my dear friend Wicked goes back to wiping snot off her pants instead of beach sand. That the smell of green chile supplants the smell of forest fires in the air. And that for two weeks each September, I begin to count down the days to the New Mexico State Fair.
Seven days, Party People. Seven days.
What is it you like best about fall?

the apple festivals. wearing jackets and boots. the cool nights. el di de los muertos. the colors of the skies and fields. the return of the bright stars.
cant wait for the state fair photos. post about the livestock! and art! and the heinous fashions you might see. grrrrrherhaha
Chickory: Every year I miss the livestock judging because of other commitments. This year I'm hoping to make it. I do so love me my bulls . . .
College and high school football!!
Riding my four-wheeler and not being choked out by heat and dust. Watching combines cut grain. Not having to mow the lawn as often. Being able to make soup and chili in my little house without making it hotter than the core of the sun.
Mosquito deaths.
everything Chickory said and what I said on my post today and I also love being able to build fires and not feel guilty if I'm not outside doing SOMETHING. AND.... I'm going our state fair at the end of September. SUPER EXCITED.
Football season. My husbands birthday followed by mine the next day. (except this year as I am doing my best to embrace a new decade.) watching the leaves turn. I would say autumn is my all around favorite season.
does that ice cream trailer come in a sport jacket? oh, summer is just dreadful. i cant stand it. i am ready to dress up and bitch slap a barbie blonde wig all the way to macon georgia.
The turning colors of the aspen leaves in the mountains.
Milk River: College football season seems to be a recurring theme. My spousal unit got that look in his eyes a week ago. Which means there goes my control over the remote for the next 1.5 bazillion weeks.
Shamu: We don't have those here, thank goodness. The bats gobble 'em right up. You should get yourself some.
Boxer: Think again about that nesting thing, girlfriend. You got Coco now!
kym: That's a Big B-day, for sure. I celebrated my hiney off on my thirtieth.
Real Housewife: Now honey, Kimmie can't help it if her weave's a mess.
WTWA: One of nature's greatest sights for sore eyes, for sure.
Bats we have, swallows we have, idiots who leave too much standing stinking water breeding too many mosquitoes we definitely have.
Crunchy leaves, cosy firesides and candles.
Summer is my favorite season, but I am with Chickory on the apple/harvest festivals. I love getting pumpkin butter and gourds. I love watching my nephew trick-or-treat, and of course making homemade food on Football Sundays from Cook's Country cookbook!
Good to be here and reading again...hope you are well. ;)
Shamu: Shoot the idiots?
Poet: Fall must be lovely out your way.
Huckleberry: Helllloooooo! I was just thinking of you the other day, isn't that strange? And here you are – LOVE the avatar :o) Hope you are well, too, dahlink. I'll drop by shortly.
Fall is mah favorite. We doan git much, jes' a brief morsel... so I has to go the nawth of the South to git a hunk of it.
Pumpkins piled on the roadside stands, scarecrows in the fields, Summer-fattened cows content in the pasture, apple-cheek children in corduroy jackets, copper, brick and espresso and colored sweaters, dark green suede loafers, college football games, men in flannel shirts, fiddle music at a hayride, happy hunter men an' makin' them venison roasts with fresh root veggies.... frosty crunch on the ground in the early morn, long mountain walks collectin' leaves and acorns, smoke scented cold air in late afternoons, reading aloud by the fire....a mug of hot cocoa as embers blink "good night"
....down comforters on the bed.
Well I love Halloween and dressing up in a silly costume and getting drunk on mulled wine and pigging out on the kids halloween candy.
College Football. It rarely rains. Cooler nights. Hawg and Deer hunting. Bi-Annual College Tour.
Bidness usually picks up. My Church's Octoberfest party.
Most of that isn't quite here yet, but it's my fave season too.
fall means the return of sparring! summers over, its getting DARK earlier and that means trouble. ive got a new blog policy for this fall: no linking with anybody that does comment modification or word verification. im ready to rumble grrrrrrrrrherherherhhahahahaa!!
Aunty: Very evocative! I want fall NOW!
Emma: Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker!
Troll: Another chime in for football. Despite my grumbling, I do have to admit, I like it, too.
K9: Rant on, dawg. I'm looking forward to some pointed commentary and anti-establishmentarianism raps.
I like PEOPLE best in the early Autumn. Seems like the crankiness of Summer heat is over and the holiday rush not yet begun so most are more relaxed, more themselves, enjoying life more and are therefore more enjoyable to be around. Just reading the comments here explains a lot about why people are better in Fall ... did you hear all that eagerness?
Fishy: Interesting! I never thought of it that way, but you may be on to something.
