Movie Clip Wednesdays: Favorite Movie from the 1930s

Stupid You Tube. Embedding disabled on all my fave movies from the 1930s, namely those wonderful screwball/remarriage comedies that always seem to star either Cary Grant or Katherine Hepburn or both together.

Movies like It Happened One Night, His Girl Friday, Philadelphia Story, and Bringing Up Baby. Where the men are men, the women dames (and both knew how to dress), and everyone speaks with that rollicking, clipped accent that makes them sound like they're listening to some bizarre internal jazz band.

At any rate, my favorite is Bringing Up Baby, a clip from which you can watch by clicking here.

And then skedaddle over to Milk River Madman's blog for his final hosting of MCW before it lands back in Boxer's lap.

I loved all those comedies too and it is such a pain when people disable embedding on YouTube! Im not sure if this works but have you tried starting your own channel and importing them to playlists there before embedding...?

Great pick x

Hi Moi,
Great choice. And yes.. "Them Dames" knew how to wear a gown. Born with Style.
I've been absent for a few weeks but it is nice to be back.
Ps MRM is having a Birthday... just thought I'd share that with you...

YouTube is the devil. I tried to like the 30s Screwball Comedies.

Happy MC day!

Joanna: Not yet, but I'll give it a go at some point. Thanks for the tip!

Princess: Welcome back, Princess! Thanks as well for the heads up on MRM's b-day.

Troll: I don't see them quite being your speed. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I loved Katherine Hepburn as a role model for young women. She had smarts and style was feminine and athletic but most importantly she did not take the back seat for being a girl. She mostly had her OWN agenda in an age where it was typical for women to serve men.
Excellent choice, happy Wednesday.

Fishy: You bet. A true iconoclast.

I love anything (ANYTHING) with Katharine Hepburn. What a fun one this was too. You can look back at her early things and realize how they tried to cast her as the ingenue, but there was always something else to her than looks alone ... and what a lesson in how to age gracefully she became. I'll be up on my page later this morning, but stop by and let me know if you have seen this one sight I've referenced last night.

I totally understand about Youtube and trying to find movies. This is completely acceptable. I tried to find a clip from Phildelphia Story last week and ran into the same trouble. Oy! Katherine Hepburn. What a woman. Put her with Cary Grant? *sigh*

Happy MCW!

My knowledge of Hollywood in the 1930's wouldn't cover the head of a pin. I find Hepburn to be a very stunning woman. My question is this: was she considered a sex symbol of her time? Or just a great leading lady? There is something about the way she carried herself that is quite striking. Not arrogant but with a confindence of invincibility. Happy MCW.

Good afternoon Moi,

Modern movies have nothing on this stuff, these were great films. Bringing up baby is my favorite of the ones they did together.

You have a great clip day. (walks off singing)

Pam: Thank you for the Time Suck!

Boxer: LOVE Philadelphia Story. Dare I say Jimmy Stewart was even halfway sexy in it?

MRM: I think she transcends mere sex symbol and is more like a total force of feminine nature. Definitely a woman worth role modeling after.

Karl: How cool! How did you make those little music mark symbols?

watching that clip reminds me ..
i really ought to get a cordless phone ..

Karl said...

Moi: create the comment in a word document and insert symbols. 2007 and 2010 versions don't seem to have them any longer. I created a file of symbols that I use from office 2003 and cut and paste.

@foam: Why? I was lamenting the other day, I've thrown away my old black rotary dial phone. If I had it on my desk now, most of the people working around me wouldn't know what it was.

Kathrine Hepburn was way classier than most sex symbols of the day (like Veronica Lake or Betty Grable) but in a very hot way. Often imitated but never duplicated. Although, Cate Blanchett did a real good job in The Aviator.

Happy MCW!

Foam: I remember when I was a teenager, my stepfather buying one of those five mile long chords so I could take the phone into my bedroom. My mother nearly divorced him over that.

Karl: I couldn't find them on my Word, which I think is 2010. Maybe a dingbats font has them . . .

Buzz: In spite of Leo the Creepo, I really enjoyed The Aviator. Good movie. I like Cate Blanchett a lot, too. Did you see her in Bandits? A silly movie, but she really cut loose in an interesting way in it.

Good morning Moi,

They don't appear to be in 2007 are 2010. Although I just cut the notes from my comment and pasted them into a 2010 document. So you could do it that way.

Enjoy your day.

Hepburn is almost -- dare I say it? -- cute in that clip. I know the word is frowned upon, and I never thought it would apply to her, but it's like Bette Davis in Petrified Forest (my favorite 1930s movie). Just not what you expect to see.

That leopard looks so doped up in the first shot; staggering around like a drunk. Kinda funny.

what is the point of you tube if you cant share it? its insane. I never saw this. I havent seen most of the movies in this round of MCW> i dont really like movies this old generally. but whats not to like about Kate? so....we'll give ti a shot. happy MCW

Kate Hepburn: What Fishy and Pam said.

An elegant era. I'se wif' ya on men as men an women as dames. Otherwise? Women as feminists? Boring. The 30s knew that. Hepburn showed how to be a dame wif' nothin' lost to individuality or liberty.

moi said...

Karl: Thanks for the tip!

Czar: I love the way the puddy tat started bumping her with his big fat head. Just like a house cat. Only, you know, more dangerous.

Chickory: What's so interesting to me about these old movies is how much we've changed in only a few short decades. Used to be, our society took hundreds of years to morph. Now, we do it in a blink of an eye. This movie was made only 70 years ago, but could you see yourself floating through life in that outfit?

moi said...

Aunty: Hepburn pretty much did what she wanted. And never lost sight of the fact that just being is fun.
