Mute Monday: Role Models

The only thing an artist has to remember is to never lose faith in his vision.

The willingness to accept responsibility for one's own life
is the source from which self-respect springs.

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.

If you wait, all that happens is that you get older.

The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it.

A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve,
not by the desire to beat others.

Don't go around saying the world owes you a living;
the world owes you nothing; it was here first.

Is not this the true romantic feeling - not to desire to escape life,
but to prevent life from escaping you?

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

She: I always pictured Mark Twain as an El Lay kinda guy . . . kidding. And yeah. Wasn't Hunter S. just so booootiful when he was young?

Aunty: Flannery O., word. And I'm still d'ohing myself about MFK Fisher. Brilliant, you!

Great Black N Whites! If I'm not mistaken, you have Ayn Rand and Hunter Thompson at the same party.

FIREWORKS!

Happy Mute Monday!

Artful: Oh, yeah. I loves me some fireworks at parties. Imagine the possibilities! Actually, Hunter S. was a big fan (although I can't imagine the feeling would have been mutual.)

I don't know who it was who took Twain to see the Atlantic Ocean for the first time, but his host asked, "Well, what do you think?" Twain's response: "It appears to be a success." I love that.

HST changed my life in a way I cannot quite put my finger on. But it was Campaign Trail that did it, not Las Vegas. I do have pegged to my bulletin board about 24 inches from my nose right now the two original covers of Rolling Stone for the Las Vegas issues. Sorry to say, the issues themselves are long gone.

And I won't forgive Wenner Publishing, for which I did one job, for dangling the possibility of editing an HST bio in front of me, and then going out of business. Grrr.

Kate: Thanks!

Czar: That's a great Twain quote! As for HST, ja, I understand. And I love the story of your up close and personal encounter with him. A moment of silence, por favor.

AB: Oh yeah, Rand was also a fashion maven for sure!

Gypsy: Isn't that a great quote? Something I'll have to hang onto this week, especially.

Happy MM to all!

She: Hey, good topic for a future post: which dead philosopher would you vote into office as president?

That gorgeous gal in the Corvette (Moi's fave sports car – had one once, Ivan ate it) is Joan Didion. I don't think anyone's ever written on California and the death of California dreamin' more brilliantly.

Wonderful choices, especially Ayn Rand. I am a big fan of hers, and she is one of the only authors where I took extensive notes in the margin as I read for pleasure...

Hey! I'se got a daid philosopizer on mah role model MM (The first edition, not the second entry)...so sure . let's do that topic!

Last one of TW's that I read was Hooking Up...I jes' dint make it through Charlotte Simmons...but I have this old volume--Mauve Gloves & Madmen...oh-ho! the writing life of chic-a-bees. Hilarious. "The ME Decade" is a chapter worth re-reading when ya look at all our aging pollyticians and actors--hoo-whee!

Thursday: Yes, lots of important things to ponder with that one!

Raven: Must be all that black and white :o)

Doris: I would just love to go knocking on Annie Proulx's door with this in flyer form and go: "Here, ya obfuscating frig. Write like THIS!" Too bossy, ya think?

Wicked: We're all well acquainted with weird, that's for sure. And you, you LEFT those Doritos at Moi's house and now they call my name every 1.5 seconds! Baaaaaad Wicked.

Aunty: TM's books on modern (f)art are likewise priceless.

Hey, I'm a (f)Art History Graduamat. My pop is a painter (canvases, not houses), and more than a few people in Moi's social circle are artists. Plus, I have done quite the job over the years of emptying the Shoe Fund in the merry service of booootiful art purchases.

I just have to laugh at some of it sometimes. I mean, Jackson Pollock. Come on, right?
