Rock of Ages

"Man fulfills his dream and by photographic magic produces a precise image of the Grand Canyon. The result is not that he adores nature or beauty the more. Instead he adores his camera—and himself."
— Daniel J. Boorstin

"Essentially the camera makes everyone a tourist in other people's reality, and eventually in one's own."
— Susan Sontag

Uhoh, I need to rethink my camera everywhere I go lest someone take me for a Japanese tourist. Sounds fabulous, i love the photo, you have it framed beautifully with the trees.

Aunty: I did! Because there's nothing like the Grand Canyon in mid June to remind you that no matter how fit you think you are, Mother Nature, she is fitter. It is good, as a human, to be smacked down by nature's breathtaking awesomeness every now and again.

Pam: That last photo was fun to take. Sunset, South Rim, at the Yavapai Museum—prime spot for viewing the great orb's descent. 7:30 p.m.? Crickets chirping. 7:39 p.m.? It was as if the sky opened up and tourists fell out. What my photo didn't capture was the kindly aged Asian gent just off to the right behind me who was visibly confused as to why I kept turning around to photograph away from the event. After me doing this a half dozen times, he finally turned his view finder in that direction, too. Mooooooooooo!

oooh, you're right. Too crowded. But I love that you said "it's good as humans to be smacked down by nature's breathtaking awesomeness." Amen to that!

When Mr. Boxer and I were visiting Pearl Harbor, our small tour was over taken by a busload of Japanese tourists who raced to take pictures of the memorial before they were called back to the bus. My way of looking at why and how pictures are taken changed after that.

@Pam - my camera is always with me nowadays and I thought the same thing when reading this.

So glad you had a good time and I'm on Team Moi for that Rim to Rim challenge you want to do.

Boxer: Oooooo, you may regret saying that! Top need is a driver(s) willing to do the 5 hour loop from south rim to north to drop off and then pick up. And, of course, anyone who wants to hitch along for the adventure.
