You made a marriage of two of my favorite things--green chile and Scotland. Never did I think I'd hear of both of them in the same sentence. The only thing better is if you could have worked a pirate into the story...but, oh, wait, the story was written BY a pirate, a dreaded one! Glory be, I have reached nirvana.Wicked Thistlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03042361300908347571noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4782769961461736606.post-90960146877236298642007-09-19T06:05:00.000-07:002007-09-19T06:05:00.000-07:00Aw, stories like Pirate's, that's what I'm talking...Aw, stories like Pirate's, that's what I'm talking about. Some people walk a mile for a Camel. A New Mexican will walk a bazillion for one over-priced Big Jim and a flame over which to roast it. Scotland of all places . . . love it!moihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07824043795171732429noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4782769961461736606.post-41500954516561069872007-09-18T20:13:00.000-07:002007-09-18T20:13:00.000-07:00GREEN GREEN! I LIKE GREEN!did you save me any? One...GREEN GREEN! I LIKE GREEN!

did you save me any?

One time when I lived in Edinburgh, Scotland, there was a shop that I frequented - it was the only place in town that had peanut butter, brownie mix, black beans, refrieds, etc. It was a little hole in the wall called (of all things) Lupe Pinto's. It was my only connection to New Mexican food, but it was thin and I held it dearly.

One day I went into Lupe Pinto's and about fell over when I saw that they had actual real and true green chiles in their glass case. Honest to God Green Chiles.

It happens that these were grown in Dorset, possibly the only place in the entire UK with enough sunshine for such a thing. I said HOW MUCH???? And I paid a pound each for my Big Jims - I think I bought two.

A pound is about $2. By New Mexican standards this is highway robbery and pocketbook rape. Did I complain?

Does the pope go doody in the woods?

I took them home in a brown paper bag. I waited a couple of days - they turned red. OMG!!!

Then I roasted them in my tiny kitchen in the oven. Then I peeled them and put them on the most delicious burrito I had had in about a year and a half - I think it was chicken, beans, cheddar, sour cream and freshly roasted and chopped green. I had learned, living in Scotland, that pretty much anything can be made into a burrito - I was that desperate for my comfort food. But nothing tops the true home staple ingredients.

I was pleased to report it had a pretty authentic flavour, and a nice fire.

That very night I was awakened - at about 1 in the morning - by the throbbing skin of my fingers. Yes, that chile was so magnificent it went right through my cautious work and onto my skin. I made the biggest mistake a girl from New Mexico can, and I paid with a lack of sleep. No amount of scrubbing relieved me - only some analgesics cured my pain.

The full tummy made up for it.

(your story inspired mine - that's all I got)the Dread Pirate Rackhamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06758895507726373202noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4782769961461736606.post-54081817840962851172007-09-18T12:34:00.000-07:002007-09-18T12:34:00.000-07:00Thanks Teach, Now I know a much better way to get ...Thanks Teach, Now I know a much better way to get them skins off, whew. That will make my chicken/green chile casserole mucho bettero.Hope Bonnie Joe reads this!Doris Rosehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08932937296853951351noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4782769961461736606.post-12526642872124777882007-09-18T09:50:00.000-07:002007-09-18T09:50:00.000-07:00I had no idea.
