Haiku Mondays: SEVEN

Emmi Whitehorse, Silent Warbler, #1428, oil on canvas, 2007

Synesthesia

Senses intertwine.
Symbols marry mood and hue:
Seven's brash yellow.

Ms. Kym was our illustrious winner last week, however, due to the fact that she is about to give birth any second now, Señor Troll is hosting this time around. So head over to his Stroll to participate.

Great haiku. I can see one reason you might like this piece: looks kinda like cave art.

Czar: Thank you.

The painting is by a well known Navajo artist from New Mexico. I interviewed her for a story once. I don't like most abstract art at all, but her work really struck me. They're huge canvases, but there is something almost snapshot-like about them to me—vignettes of movement through the landscape, with modern signs and symbols substituting for landforms, earth, sky, plants, animals. They reminded me, in fact, of where I grew up. When I interviewed Emmi, I found out she and her family had land not far from where I did grow up and that her work is a celebration of sorts of her own itinerant childhood. I'd love to own one of her canvases.

The magic of evoking emotion with canvas or syllable is a present.

I love this artwork also. A desert landscape of sorts. And the visual is needed with the haiku but then it all makes sense. Great job! Greetings from those of on the baby-watch/wait circuit! Happy 4th~!

i love abstraction - this one is on the verge of non objective to me. I adore minimalism as well -when its powerful. Synesthesia is the measure of success of this kind of work. great haiku. have a lovely farce of july. grherhahaha

Fishy: And so far, we're the only species that does it. Which has always been food for my thought.

Pam: Celebrating the Fourth AND being on Baby Watch—–are you drinking yet :o) ?

K9: I've come to really dig Rothko since our visit in Seattle (and high on my list is a trip to Marfa to see the Donald Judds.) What you said by way of justifying the purpose of abstraction and minimalism, you said better than any professor I ever had or any book I ever read. But I'll never, ever, give you Pollock :o)

if you ever have a chance to see simon schaumas power of art on ROthko -do so. It makes me cry every time. and the good Rothkos- like at MoMA will take your breath away. thank you for that high compliment. I wish I hadnt have blown my video interview for that art history gig on discovery.

This painting (even small and on a computer screen) took my breath away. It moves up and down and then I read Chickie's comment and I got even happier.

Your haiku is a perfect compliment to the painting.

You continue to hate on Pollock? Bwahahahahah. It was my favorite card to pull when we used to play Masterpiece as a kid.

Happy 4th of July to you and S.B. Thanks for getting my vodka into the freezer. You are a true friend.

K9: Hey, it's on YouTube! I'll watch it.

Boxer: I have something to confess. I popped the Goose last night while making dinner. I simply had to see what all the fuss is about, so I poured myself a wee bit in a glass and iced it down with a pistol cube and you know what? I understand. Wow. That's tasty.

P.S. But the rest of it's in the freezer with a big sign: DO NOT TOUCH! Not for S.B., but for me :o)

Like Stan and Kyle, I learned something today. What I learned is bizarre and I can't think of a way to make money off it. But, now I know what synte...synthe...

That condition you named your haiku after is.

I didn't get to the part where it relates to Art though. I stopped at 5 + 2 = Yellow.

happy holiday!

Troll: My 5 + 2 = Orange. And you are dark blue/purple.

awesome painting! reminds me of Klee.
synesthesia is an interesting condition. and your GREAT haiku goes with this particular painting marvelously.

Foam: Thanks, Foamy. I didn't know I had it until a couple years ago. I thought everyone's senses worked this way.

@ Moi,
And THE primary reason to discredit the evolution theory.

@ Troll,
it's a hallucination which induces an emotional response to what is not there.

I like this piece, Moi.

An the Haiku is sublime!

@ Fishy
But..it IS there. Sort of a primordial awareness not all tap into. A similar thang can happen wif text--(as I embarrassed mahself wif' Czar's Haiku at Troll's Blog recently) wif symbols that in word or image communicate a subtext that is "there" but like the proverbial tree in the forest the question is if it is heard or not--that is, if there is no receiver to receive the information does that mean the information (sound, meaning, emotion) is not there?

Moi, what is on youtube? An explanation on Rothko -_I do not "get" him. I can paint blocks of primary colors too--whas' so nifty about that? I stood fer a good 15 minutes in a gallery in Madrid, onc't, gazin' at Rothko--nuthin' happened fer me : (

But yore Emmi--yes, Kandinsky-esque an' I likey.

moi said...

Fishy: Not necessarily. But it is interesting, our species being the only one on the planet who operates way beyond rote instinctive action. The same question applies—"Why?"—regardless of whether we arrived via evolution or creation.

To what are you referring when you say it's a hallucination that creates an emotional response? Synesthesia or Southpark? :o)

Aunty: I don't like most abstract art but there is something about Rothko that gets to me. On YouTube is the show about him that K9 referenced here.

Welcome, I say,

Liquid valium. hmmmmmmm.

p.s. we can always make a stop at the hooch store on the way from the airport, so drink away, pal!

@ Aunty,
Yes it is a real occurence. And, as you mentioned can be born of multiple stimuli. Some say it is the brain connecting the missing dots.

@ Moi,
The why (for me) is because I do believe we are created in His image and, there is more than one reason He is called the Creator.

I've never seen South Park :D
