Mute Monday: Brand

Just popping in from a Marriott in Detroit with the following observations:

1. The Detroit airport no longer looks like it was built by someone whose design sensibilities included a tongue-in-cheek homage to Jakarta International Airport circa 1975, minus Mel Gibson When He Was Young and Sexy and Not Bat Shit Crazy, Y'all.

2. The Detroit airport is now this light and airy thing reminiscent of something Eero Saarinen would have designed and even includes one oh-so-über nifty Scandinavian design shop called the Pangborn Connection that K9 would die for and which I had to hold myself back from entering.

Soooo, what does this have to do with Mute Monday?

Well, Moi's fave brand of course. Otherwise known as:

Be still my heart.

  1. Your fave brand is Duty Free? I'm guessing they didn't let you bring guns to Detroit. So be careful!

    Happy Mute MOnday!

  4. Eero Saarinen??? Because I am so ignorant, I had no idea who he was until I proofread a book about him for one of my presses. Ended up being invited to the Finnish consulate's party celebrating the book's release in NYC. While of course I had to send regrets, it's put me on an interesting mailing list, where now I am regularly invited to bizarre Finnish events and openings in NYC.

Great story from the Saarinen book: He had designed a big General Motors project for suburban NYC in about 1956, for which the PR wizards for GM wanted to set off an atomic bomb in celebration. You know, kind of like a big fireworks display. Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed.

  7. I had to transfer planes in Detroit twice last year. The airport's new and flash but the attitude's unchanged.

Don't ever ask people what time it is in Detroit, Philidelphia and Brooklyn.
